“You better get me now while I’m cheap, cause I’m about to blow up!” Now, I cannot take credit for this fabulous quote, but I can definitely spread the word about what it means. Since there was no PRSSA meeting this past week, I found myself in search of something else that could broaden my horizons. So, on Tuesday night, I attended the International Association of Business Communicators meeting. The guest speaker was a woman named Erica Benoit who is the owner and founder of Benoit Enstyle. She started a mini empire all by herself through her love of clothes. She is an image consultant, wardrobe stylist and personal shopper. Originally from Atlanta, Benoit grew up with very modest means. She graduated high school, went into the Navy and searched through numerous jobs to find her true passion in life. She eventually made her way back to Atlanta where she attended American Intercontinental University and got her BFA in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing.

Fun fact: My friends refer to me as "Nugget" at all times, but that's probably because I am a total of five feet tall.

What exactly is Pinterest?  Pinterest is a virtual corkboard that allows you to bookmark and share your online interests by "pinning" them to your boards.  They can be used for a variety of things such as planning a wedding, decorating your future home or saving your favorite pumpkin spice recipes!  Although it is super addicting and helps you avoid your homework for a few hours, it is a great tool to organize things you like and share them with your friends.  Tech Crunch, a blog centered around technology start-ups, claims that "Pinterest Joins Twitter And Facebook As The Newest Self-Expression Engine."

This week at PRSSA, we heard two very different perspectives about public relation (PR) strategy in the digital space. Kaitlyn Denhihy (UGA ’09), a digital strategist at Engauge in Atlanta, shared a little about life at an advertising agency and case studies from two recent digital campaigns. Life at an agency is crazy and fun, but at the end of the day, they are working hard to create measureable success for clients. Denhihy stressed the importance of networking (both digitally and IRL (in real life)), and securing internships that are hands-on. Once you get experience, you become a great asset to potential employers. After all, we are the digital generation; in the age of social media we are the first generation that grew up surrounded by technology. And this is exactly what employers are looking for in entry-level hires.

Fun fact: As early as 18 months old I would memorize and reenact my favorite commercials. At age 2 I asked for a pair of Calvin Klein Jeans. Who knew I would pursue a degree in Advertising?

Given the current state of the economy, I think we are all constantly wondering …will I find a job after graduation? … What can I do now to prepare? … How can I make myself stand out? Last week at PRSSA Sydney Carroll (UGA ’08), with Lockheed Martin, discussed the Communications Leadership Development Program (CLDP), as well as shared with us advice about life after graduation.

Sydney gave great insight about the culture and environment in corporate public relations compared to an agency. At UGA, she interned with the Edelman Digital Agency, where she worked on a variety of accounts. At Lockheed, the fact that everyone is working toward the same goal provides a level of comfort and even though it’s always the same “client,” every day is different. The pride and ownership she experiences when watching a plane go from the assembly line to the runway is rewarding.

PRSA|GA is offering a unique opportunity for PRSSA members to shadow a professional in the Atlanta area.  We are introducing our Fall 2011 Shadow Day Program, which will be held on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 2 to 5 p.m., followed by a social mixer event at Fado’s Irish Pub restaurant in Atlanta.

The program involves matching PRSSA members with PR professionals in Atlanta to “shadow” them for an afternoon and glimpse into the real world of public relations.  Eligible participants will join a PR professional at his or her office on Thursday afternoon and can then join us all for an informal networking event at Fado’s.

If you would like to participate, click on the link below to be directed to the Shadow Day Student Recruitment Form.  Please fill out the form completely. If you have any questions or problems with the form, please email ada@cookerly.com

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEFKc2J6bFRQcXQ1dXh3V3ZLa2hIQ2c6MQ

There is no cost to participate in the program, except for paying for dinner/parking at the restaurant and transportation to/from the company you are visiting for Shadow Day.

This program is only available if you are a PRSSA member in good standing. We encourage all interested PRSSA members to participate in this program.  Please keep in mind we will do our best to accommodate all preferences but may not be able to provide the first choice in all cases.  You will get a real-life glimpse into a day in the life of a public relations professional and some valuable networking experience.

The deadline to RSVP is Friday, Sept. 23.

Perception is reality. Reality is influenced by the way your brand, your business or even you are perceived by your publics, stakeholders or peers.  In the extremely digitized world we live in today, one blemish on your reputation can spread like wildfire: one tweet or one Facebook update at a time.  Perception is never completely in your control, but with reputation and issues management skills and effective communication skills under your belt, you can influence perception, which in turn becomes reality.

Now pause for a minute, and while you allow those statements to sink in, let me ask you a couple very simple questions.

1)    Do you aspire to become a PR superstar in the near future?

AND

2)    Do you find value in elite networking opportunities with peers and professionals from UGA and around the country?

If you answered yes to these questions (which I am sure you all did), strongly consider investing in yourself and your future, and go to PRSSA National Conference in Orlando this October.

This year, you will learn about effective strategies of communication when it comes to managing perception while meeting and collaborating with your peers: the bright, young minds of tomorrow. I cannot tell you what an amazing experience you will have in Orlando, but I promise it will be an experience of a lifetime.

Last year, Carly, Marah, Courtney and I spent four days in Washington, D.C., and those four days were priceless. We left with a much stronger bond not only with each other, but also with students from around the country. We shared our best practices with other chapters, learned about life in all sectors of PR, brought home innovative strategies to engage others in our chapter, gained invaluable connections with professionals in sectors spanning the gamut of public relations and explored the charm of the nation’s capital.

This year, at Seaworld, you will have countless opportunities to enjoy your own journey into your future, and gain experiences beyond those we had last year. Talk to your executive board about potential funding as a PRSSA member, start choosing your roommates and go to http://www.prssa.org/events/Conference/ to explore the magic of National Conference in Orlando. The deadline to register is quickly approaching (SEPTEMBER 12, 2011). Let’s show everyone why the UGA Drewry Chapter of PRSSA is the greatest chapter in the world; register today!

If you have any questions or just want to keep in touch, please do not hesitate to email me at mgrayuga@gmail.com. I will always be here for you and look forward to seeing each and every one of you excel and grow over the coming years. You are in fantastic hands with the amazing executive board, and Carly as your president, so get to know them and have an awesome year everyone!

Always remember the theme of this year’s conference: Perception is Reality.
